R.I.P., Jack
'song has a wonderful update and tribute (including Jack's origin story) here.

A few more things:

A. We named him "Captain Jack Sparrow" before the Disney movie came out. We figured the movie would be a bomb, but that his name would be a cultural touchstone to when we adopted him (which was about a month before the movie).

B. When Jack was about 1.5 years old, he still perched on my shoulder. He was full-grown, but hadn't gotten actually fat at this point. One day, on an exceptionally hot July afternoon, I had just gotten home from work and had doffed my shirt. Jack perched on my shoulder while I sat at my desk, until the door rang with a UPS delivery.

When cats get startled, as you know, their claws come out. And Jack, being a cat of little brain, was easily startled.

Once the bleeding in my shoulder stopped, I made sure to wear a shirt whenever he perched on me.

C. We'd been overestimating his age by a year for the last few years. I don't know how or when that happened, but I think it's because he fit into our house so perfectly, we assumed we'd had him for longer than we did.

D. I have never seen a cat so intent on grooming his humans. He literally sat there for as long as twenty minutes one time, licking my arm (I gave up because there's only so much sandpaper tongue one can take). He might not have been smart, but when he put what passed for a mind to something, he kept at it.

E. He was the most loving cat ever. Not just humans. He loved Max and Victoria from the day he first met them. On the few occasions he met dogs, he insisted on cuddling with them and grooming them, as well. When we'd have a crowd over, Max would deign to be touched, Victoria would run and hide, and Jack would go crazy with excitement

F. Jack almost died twice before. Once, he'd managed to get one paw through his breakaway collar without causing it to break away. And he spent a day like that, with the collar pulled tight against his chest, rubbing the skin raw. If he hadn't leapt onto my chest that night (thus exposing me to the smell), we'd never have known until it was too late (yes, he basically almost died because he was stupid). And last year, as many of you know, he had a tooth infection that led to his not being able to eat. Not sure what happened to the other six lives, but he was dumb enough to probably use them running into walls.

G. Jack was the first pet who has ever been mine. The poodle I had when I was wee was thirteen when I was born, and absolutely my mom's pet. Max was 'song's. But Jack. Jack was mine (see the aforementioned origin story).

H. When the vet put Jack to sleep, he was so calm. He knew it was time, and we held him and kissed him and thanked him. He was such a sweet cat.

So sad! My Luna is 15; she has many more years behind her than ahead. I am always saddened to hear about the loss of a friend. :(

Go softly, Jack.

Comfort to your household and all others who loved Jack.

Ach, I am so sorry.

(Also, re B above: my Sophie was a shoulder-cat, all her life. Luckily, she was small and skinny, so she could entirely live across my shoulders if she wanted to. Except there was this one time, I had leaped out of bed to answer the phone; and I was sitting on the stairs, as I did, and Sophie jumped onto my shoulders, as she did. Except that having leaped out of bed, I had no clothes on. Val was three hundred miles away, and when I screamed she said "Oh, come on, it can't have hurt that much, whatever it was. By the way, what was it?" So I explained about having unexpected cat, clinging tight; and the next day I went for a physio appointment, and the physio gaped at my neck and shoulders in a Really Worried Way...)

(I still miss my shoulder-cat.)

*hugs* It's hard losing a furry family member :( Jack is somewhere playing with my kitty Boo-Boo, who was also rather dumb at times, but as lovable as could be.

I never know what to say to things like this.

I'm glad you guys had him (and he had you) for the time you did. And may his memory be a blessing.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've never met you or Jack, but this had me in tears... It made me remember my little shoulder-sitter.

C. I know C really well. I had my guy at the ripe old age of 17. Dogs and cats differ in age thing, but still we'd have him long enough that it felt like it'd been forever.

I am once again sorry for your loss and also annoyed that you could express storytelling so well. I still can't grasp mine.
