Wednesday stuff
(Reminder: I'm selling a copy of Richard Laymon's The Wilds!)

1. Everything I have to say about today's "holiday," I said back in ought-three.

1.5 That said, why isn't there a "talk like a ninja" day?

2. Why the hell are they remaking The Eleventh Hour? You cannot replace Patrick Stewart or Ashley Jensen. Remember: The Office is the exception when it comes to remaking British TV shows (and in this day and age, with BBC America and other channels making the originals more easily available, remakes are generally pointless).

3. Free subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly.

4. The new "Intelligent Design" movie starring Ben Stein (who used to actually be intelligent and honest)? Turns out to be made by lying liars who lie. I'm shocked.

5. Good for Mars/M&M! They're refusing to join Hershey's and others in supporting the continued lowering of standards for what defines chocolate. Not that Hershey's hasn't done an amazing job of lowering standards even within the current legal definition.

6. Book Autopsies! Ganked from [info]sarabellum.

7. Not only is Skii-ball coming to the Wii (in the form of Game Party), but Amazon's selling it for $20 as a pre-order!

7.5 In related Wii News, there's a Williams Pinball Collection coming out! And it includes Pinbot, Firepower, and Funhouse! It also includes Whirlwind, but since the thrill of that game was the fan blowing on you, I'm guessing it'll lost a little bit in translation.

8. The Harvard Coop claims that their prices are "intellectual property." Me, I just note that there are a hell of a lot of other bookstores at Harvard Square who might want my money.

9. Eddie Haskell versus the SAG.

10. Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for: The World Beard and Moustache Championships results!

Talk Like A Ninja Day would be great for people who have stupid coworkers because, as we all know, ninjas are silent and make no noise.

Also, ninjas can stealthily kill stupid coworkers.

Ninjas are silent but deadly.

I'll be a ninja to my coworkers after eating Taco Bell.

The problem, of course, is that ninjas who rely on Taco Bell run the risk of dying mid-battle.

I have a very weak sense of smell. This is both a blessing and a curse, as it means that I get to change all of the really bad diapers.

Ben Stein might have been intelligent but he was never honest.

Well, I figured he was during his game show days. No way anyone could be honest when writing for Nixon, of course.

Regarding remakes of British shows, don't forget that All in the Family, Sanford and Son, and Three's Company were all Americanizations (or, rather, Americanisations) of Brit-TV.

Regarding Ben Stein, this is a man who worked for the Nixon Administration -- when, exactly, was he honest?

And if Norman Lear comes back to television, I'll give the Americanized remakes more of a chance. Jerry Bruckheimer is no Lear.

As for Stein, I figured that he was at least honest during his game show days. He also was on a Frontline I watched some time ago talking about credit card debt, and actually had some useful things to say.

Hmm, but if you look at the disasters, like the remakes of Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin or Fawlty Towers, the track record's not too good.

It goes both ways sometimes too. I can't remember what it was called, but the UK remake of Golden Girls was toe-curlingly bad.

And the UK Office is better than the US one :)

7. ZOMG.

NEED.

I mean-- it's skeeball! For the wii! Who doesn't love skeeball?

NOBODY.

It is a universal truth! We could end the Iraq war AND the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts if we just hosted a big skeeball party... they would see that deep down, we are one. Skeeball love is part of the human essential spirit.

XD *squee*

#2. In a very vague way, isn't The Eleventh Hour just an X-Files riff?

Wow--I feel honored to have helped contribute to your posts of the day list!

Eleventh Hour was much more hardcore science than The X-Files. It also relied very heavily on Stewart and Jensen's talents, which is why I can't see it working with new actors.

Since it's widely known that ninjas don't talk (about as widely as it's known that all pirates talked like Robert Newton), perhaps there should instead be a "sneak like a ninja" day, devoted to surprise attacks on the people who trust you the other 364 days of the year.

1.5 That said, why isn't there a "talk like a ninja" day?

I gotta ask, how *does* a ninja talk? Aren't they supposed to be, ya know, all silent and sneaky? Or would we do the bad-dubbing-speech? (Where you wiggle your mouth oddly for a while before and after speaking your piece in pigeon-English.)

Re 1.5: I'm sure you've already been informed, but Dec 5 is ninja day. Although, since ninjas are masters of stealth and silence, you can only wish that the people around you would talk like them.
